The NSW Government Licensing Service (GLS) is used to manage licensing across several NSW Government portfolios, covering a wide array of regulatory regimes. These services are provided across a diverse set of industries and community groups. They can be classified roughly as follows:
- Business Licences issued to small and large businesses
- Occupations and Trade Licences
- Recreational Licences issued to members of the public
- Event, Project Permits and Assets
Below is a list and some basic statistics of various categories of licences managed via the NSW Government Licensing Service.
** The licence numbers in the sections below indicate approximate volume of licence records held in the Government Licensing System. This comprises licences in all statuses (e.g. Current, Expired, Suspended, Cancelled etc.) as of 31 August 2009.

- 70,000+ Building & Trade Businesses / Partnerships, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 44,000+ Motor vehicle Repair Businesses, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 20,000+ Motor Dealers, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 15,000+ Pubs, Clubs and Liquor Busineses, by the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
- 30,000+ Radiation Licences, by the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water
- 5,000+ Property Valuers, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 4,500+ Travel Agents, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 4,900+ Pawnbrokers & Second-hand dealers, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 300+ Private Hospitals and Day Procedure Centres, by the NSW Health Department
- Up to 20,000+ Tobacco Retailer Notifications, by the NSW Health Department
- 8,500+ Children's Services Licences, by the Department of Human Services
- 6,000+ Charitable Fundraising Licences, by the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
Occupational & Trade Licences**
GLS is used to manage the following trade and occupational licence records:
- 348,000+ Building & Trade Professionals, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 133,000+ Motor Vehicle Repair Professionals, by the Office of Fair Trading
- 42,000+ Dangerous Goods Drivers, by the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water
- 4,000+ Approved Liquor Managers, by the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
- 640+ Pesticide Applicator Pilots, by the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water
GLS is used to manage the following recreational licence records:
- 277,000+ Long term (1 and 3 years) Recreational Fishing Permits, by the Department of Industry and Investment
- 56,000+ Native Animal Keepers, by the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water
Events, Projects, Assets & other Licences and Permits
Every year, GLS is used to issue a large number of one-off Event and project Permits.
- 39,000+ Short term (3 days and 1 Month) Recreational Fishing Permits are issued on average every year by the Department of Industry and Investment
- 14,000+ Trade Promotion & Lottery Permits are issued on average every year by the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
- 10,000+ Owner Builder Permits are issued annually by the Office of fair Trading
- 2,000+ Native Animal Import / Export Licences are issued on average every year by the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water
In addition, GLS is used to manage
- 190+ Pesticide Applicator Aircraft Licences by the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water
